The Bible on The Duty to Be Charitable to the Poor

In Deuteronomy 15:9-10, we read God admonishing against those who would think to refuse the poor any loans as one nears the every 7th year when all debts are cancelled. (Bankruptcy originated in this law of the Bible.)

It reads:

Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: “The seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near,” so that you do not show ill will toward the needy among your fellow Israelites and give them nothing. They may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be found guilty of sin.10 Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.

What is interesting is that God foresees how one law to help the poor -- the cancellation of debts every seven years -- could be used as an excuse to not give or loan money to one in need. God says don't take advantage of the Law in that way.

There are more promises in the Bible about generosity and giving than about any other subject! Here are just a couple of them:
"Good will come to him who is GENEROUS . . . he will never be shaken . . . he will be remembered forever . . . he will have no fear of bad news . . . his heart will steadfast, trusting in the Lord." Psalm 112:5-7  (NIV

“Those who give generously to those in need... will never be forgotten... they will have influence and honor.” Psalm 112:9 (NLT)

“Be generous to poor people, and freely lend them as much as they need. Never be hard-hearted and tight-fisted with them... Be sure to give to them without any hesitation. When you do this, the Lord your God WILL BLESS YOU IN EVERYTHING  you work for and set out to do.” Deuteronomy 15:8 & 10 (GW)
